On September 27th, Hurricane Helene hit our part of Western North Carolina. The campground had endured flooding in the past but nothing prepared us for what this storm had in store.
Thankfully, we were able to evacuate before the storm arrived, were all safe and in the end had less damage compared to our neighbors in surrounding areas.
We had one month left in our 2024 camping season and, well, we didn't have a campground to welcome people to. We had significant damage to our entrance and bridges. Our office and campstore flooded. Many campers were damaged and some totaled. We were out of power for roughly 3 weeks and had no cell or phone service. We couldn't get in contact with everyone who had reservations to come stay with us, many being out of state and were unaware of just how much the hurricane devastated our area. We had no choice but to close for an undisclosed amount of time.
As soon as roads were safe and the weather permitted, our campground community, family, and friends came together and went to work. Within a few weeks we had started to see a remarkable improvement of what the storm left behind at Rose Creek. Being able to band together, we weren't giving up. If it were not for everyone coming together to work, we may not have been able to open for the 2025 season, however, opening day was still planned for April 4th, 2025.
We still have a few things here and there to replace or renovate. Our camping community along with friends and family have put in physical labor and donated their time and money to get us up and running. Funds from our own pockets are still pouring into the campground to replace what we have lost.
We have been asked what can be done to help us out while still recovering from Hurricane Helene. If anyone is interested, we've created a wish list of different items that we have lost during the flood or items that would greatly benefit our campground. These items can be purchased elsewhere if found at a better price. The Amazon wishlist was just an easy way to put together a list of things we feel that the campground will benefit from.
Like many others in WNC, this is our livelihood. Rose Creek Family Campground is a small business that is family owned and operated. Another way to help us get back to normal is to please make plans to visit us. Make plans to visit all of the surrounding areas that were hit by Hurricane Helene. There are so many hidden treasures amongst the Carolina mountains that are worth checking out. A lot of these areas depend on the autumn peak leaf season to get them through winter and with the storm at the start of the fall, a lot of businesses missed out on that income and spent the winter stressed, unsure what the future held while trying to pick up the pieces.
We appreciate all of the shares, inquiries, help and donations so far. We will never be what we once were but are hoping to come back even better than before. We are ready to welcome you back to Rose Creek...
